Carrying out my GAME Plan

The first thing I need to do to carry out my GAME plan is to become proficient with the technology that a plan to have my students utilize.  I want to create a classroom blog and utilize podcasting.  I believe that I have the blogging part down but I have a little bit of experience when it comes podcasting.  Cennamo, Ertmer and Ross (2009) talked about setting goals. Goal one is to practice the technology and learn how to utilize the technology that is available to me.  My second goal is to make sure that my students learn the fundamentals of finding and evaluating Internet sources. In a previous course I took at Walden University I was supplied with a textbook that contained classroom applications that I can use with my classes to make sure they learn who to properly evaluate and cite sources.  I will work with my students on this before we begin our Internet resources.  I will look for online tutorials and find different strategies that I can model for my students.  Most importantly I will discuss with my Media Center specialist to see what technology we have available in our district for our students to utilize.

I believe that is vitally important to teach students the fundamentals of the internet. In this technologically advanced generation children still struggle with finding reliable sources. The internet supplies children with a plethora of information and often children have difficulty finding a site’s validity. I have used the resources from a previous Walden class to teach my student’s the proper approaches to navigate the internet. I enjoyed using the website, http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/. I presented the site to my students on my projector. They all began talking to one another and asking each other, “Have you ever heard of a tree octopus?” We then went through the process of checking the validity of the site. The students were shocked that someone could create a completely false website. It was a huge eye opener for my ten year old students, but showed them that they cannot rely on all material on the web.

Sadie-

You seem to have a good initial plan in place, and I commend you for experimenting with technologies that will challenge not only your students, but you! Your plan for learning the technology, checking on the availability of district technology, and breaking down information for the students is a realistic and effective approach. Additionally, I would suggest to you that you look for professional development that deals specifically with what you intend to practice-in your case, pod casts. I attended professional development on pod casts last fall, and I feel that those sessions were what really prepared me for implementing a pod cast project in my own classroom. I would also suggest-and, knowing your work, I'm sure this is part of your thought process-taking time to develop a meaningful application for the pod cast project. As exciting and useful as the podcast may be, the content value should still be apparent and extensive. As Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer remind us, "access to hardware, software, and connectivity means more than simply having the technology available for your use-it's how you use the technology that's important (2009, p. 184). I look forward to hearing more!

Sadie,
I agree with the last Walden course being very informative in several ways. The textbook does have so many resources and will be a wonderful reference for us all. Also, I appreciated how the last course taught us the importance of teaching students how to evaluate different websites for validity and being objective factually. To include the last course as part of your action plan was a very insightful step on your part. Good thinking! Also, you stated that you will need to seek some assistance for creating podcasts. I wanted to ask if you have tried voicethreads? I have found voicethreads to be much easier than podcasting. Just a thought. Good luck, but it sounds as if you have a good start to your plan.

Ms. Serapiglia,

I used the same type of activity with my English II class and the results were the same. Instead of using the tree octopus website I used the one about Martin Luther King that was developed by a white supremacy group. My students had the same reaction as your ten year olds and they were between the ages of 16 and 17.

Amanda,

You brought up some good points about attending professional development that will help me develop the skills I need to be successful. My district is in the process of taking recommendations for our professional development cohorts for next year and I think I might turn in a request for one that focuses on some of the newer technologies such as podcast and movie maker. I believe there are a lot of other teachers in my district who would benefit from this type of professional development as well.

Kimberly,

I have never tried voice threads. Do you have a site that you would recommend I utilize for my first attempt at voice threads or a place where I can find information about it?
